Taking the measurements

How to measure a garment you own, so that you can compare it with a chart.

Lay a familiar garment flat, smooth it gently and avoid stretching. Use the same measuring method as the product chart.

01

Use the same starting points

Place a familiar garment on a flat surface and smooth the fabric without pulling it taut. Keep the tape straight and record the measurement in the unit used by the chart you are reading. Note where you started and ended each measurement. Two numbers are only comparable when they describe the same part of a garment in the same way.

02

Write down more than chest width

Chest width is useful, but body length, shoulders and sleeves affect how a garment feels too. Some charts measure a sleeve from the shoulder seam; others begin at the centre back of the neck. Check the diagram before comparing. If a measurement method is unclear, include the chart and your question in an email rather than guessing which convention applies.
