Reading the label

The care label on the garment controls. This page explains how to use it.

Decode the care label

A wash tub symbol covers washing. Read its number, bars and any crossing-out on your own label; do not infer a temperature from this guide.

01

Read the complete instruction

A care symbol changes meaning when a number, bar, dot or cross is added. Read the whole label rather than identifying only its broad shape. The tool above explains the categories so you know what to look for; it does not replace the instructions supplied with a particular garment. Check both the garment label and any separate guidance for the printed area.

02

Ask when instructions conflict

Keep the care information that arrives with your piece. If a listing and a label appear to disagree, ask for clarification before choosing a wash, drying or ironing setting. Include the item name and a clear photograph of the relevant instructions. Describe what is unclear rather than assuming that one general rule applies to every fabric and print.
